Heidi and I took an extended road trip/holiday along the Great Ocean road in southwest Victoria to Adelaide South Australia. Our friends Tony and Melissa Hand invited us to stay in Adelaide over the New Years celebration. Highlights of the trip included a charter fishing trip in the Indian Ocean, sitting on the beach, swimming in the ocean, day hikes to view seals, visiting a maritime museum and countless good meals.

Day 1 continued . . .

After picking up my bag from the airport we did some necessary shopping and settled into Seven Mile Beach Cabin Park. For the sum of $20 you get a nice campsite, warm showers, and with only a five minute walk, great views Storm Bay. Heidi and I enjoyed a nice walk along the beach, picking up sea shells, and just enjoying the view. We grabbed fish and chips for tea (supper in Australian) at the local shop and headed back to the cabin park.
After our 18 hour day we were ready to get a goods night sleep. Day one concluded by falling asleep to the sounds of waves crashing on shore.

Tassie Mania Day 1

Day 1 started at 2:30 a.m with Heidi's 30 minute shower. I say this very lovingly, but also to let you know a little about where we live. First of all, because we live in a Stage 4 water restriction zone it is recommended that people only take one four minute shower per day. Secondly, after waking up at 2:30, we intended to be on the road for our two drive by 3:30a.m. We rolled out of Woomelang around 3:35!!! Yes, I made up time by only taking a two minute shower!!!!
We flew out of Mildura (Grand Forks size town on the Victoria New South Wales border), to Melbourne, then on to Hobart (the capital city of Tasmania) Tasmania is an island state off the south easter corner of Australia just in case your geography isn't up to date. We arrived in Hobart with two of three bags, and had to spend our first day exploring Hobart. Because this wasn't our plan it was a little upsetting, but we made a great day of it. We spent the day walking around Franklin Wharf, that overlooks Sullivans Cove. We hitched a ride on the Emmalisa and spent two hours boating around on the Derwent River. The picture above is of Battery Point, one of the earliest settlements in all of Australia.
Below is a picture of the Sea Shepherd "Steve Irwin" This boats job is to scare whale fishing boats from completing their job. They were conducting tours, but by the time we found about the tours we were called back to pick up my missing bag.

Harvest Time

The picture on the left was taken from the header (combine) I've been operating for work. Farming has been a great experience, and something I've always wanted to try. The two farmers I've been working for have been great teachers and very patient with me as I learn. The other picture is me after working a 12 hour day. Somehow I always seem to get very dirty!!!!

More Thanksgiving pictures.

As you can see it was a very nice day for our celebration. Honesty, I think the temperature was near 75 degrees F.

I highly recommend that everyone look into deep frying a turkey. It tasted so good, and kept our oven free to cook everything else!!!

Thanksgiving in Australia

Hello everyone, sorry it has been so long since my last post. Harvest season has kept me very busy. Anyway, two weekends ago, Heidi and I entertained 15 of our friends to a traditional Thanksgiving day feast. We cooked ham, sweet potatoes with brown sugar and marshmallows (which Australian's have never had), green bean casserole, mashed potatoes and gravy, salad, cranberries, and I deep fried a turkey. All in all everyone was very impressed and had a great day. Oh yeah, on top of everyone bringing a few cocktails of their own we also went through 27 bottles of my home brew. Each bottle contains 750 mL of booze, so you do the math!!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!!!
